EMILY CRAIG

SHAKING THE TREE

Shaking the Tree Theatre melds the boundaries of theatre and visual art by presenting audiences with unconventional theatrical experiences in their non-traditional warehouse space.

I am the theatre’s graphic designer, and I create print and digital promotional assets that are captivating and represent the experimental plays. I combine typography, texture and color to convey a story.

SHOW & TELL: PSU GRAPHIC DESIGN LECTURE SERIES

Show & Tell is Portland State Graphic Design’s weekly lecture series. We bring in designers, illustrators, art directors, any creatives you can think of! They share their wisdom with you over lunch.

I was the designer for the series’ promotional material from Winter 2023 through Spring of 2023. I created a cohesive series identity while conveying the individual personality of each speaker. I had an experimental approach and combined analog with digital by using a scanner. I scanned materials like clay, vellum and even wood letters.

BOOK COVER RE-DESIGN

An on-going passion project where I re-design covers of books (dream job is doing this full-time)!  While you technically shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, I do think that it’s where the story starts.

DISTURBANCE: A DAVID LYNCH FILM FESTIVAL

Disturbance is a speculative David Lynch film festival. The hand-done lettering is based off of David Lynch’s own handwrting. His quote “Color to me is too real. It’s limiting,” inpsired the simple color palette of black and white. I experimented with vellum to convey the blurry and confusing feelings his films often evoke.

CONSUME, ISSUE NO. 1

Consume is a zine that explores how hormones and societal structures affect those assigned female at birth. It was my senior thesis, and I worked on this for about 6 months total. Three months consisted of primary and secondary research.

In the end, I wanted to see if, through typography, image treament and layout, I could convey the really big feelings from people in my primary research.

FLICK

A personal project from someone who has watched too many movies, flick is a speculative film magazine. Through this I found solace in articles and other people discussing on forums about how they feel: movies are kind of bad now and the 90’s (specifcally ‘99) was the best decade for them.

I utilized negative space and a simple, almost mechanical aesthetic to match the melancholy nature of the content of the articles.

OBJECTS OF DESIRE

Objects of Desire is a hypothetical brochure made for the April-October 2022 exhibitions at the Design Museum in London.

In this brochure, the exhibit, Objects of Desire: Surrealism and Design 1924, was highlighted. Through type and image treatment, the brochure pushes the vistor and reader to discover the whimsical and dreamlike relationship between surrealism and design.

ENGRAM: A JOURNAL OF ART HISTORY STUDENT WRITING

TECHNICAL SKILL

Engram is an art history journal written and edited by students. This is volume 2 in the annual book series.

Volume 2 features seven articles, five of which feature women overlooked in most art history books. The book is designed to highlight and celebrate women in fine art. I worked closely with the art director, Sarah Bounds, and helped determine page layout. I also typeset the book.
